Greetings from Navajoland,
This is being written as I keep wiping tears of joy from my eyes. Tuesday's Bible class was quite an experience! The subject was "God Created Us to Last Forever."
We read eleven verses about Eternity -- I read them in English first. Then the ladies read aloud each verse three times in Navajo because they like to understand God's Word thoroughly. To give you a better atmosphere, these are the verses for you to read: Ecc. 3:11; 2 Cor. 5:1; Philip. 3:7; 1 Cor. 2:9; Matth. 25:34; Psalm 33:11; Ecc. 7:2; Hebrews 13:14; 2 Cor. 5:6-7; 1 John 2:17. I introduced the verses with brief comments. The Holy Spirit does the work of opening their ears, eyes and hearts.
That task was HUGE that night. There were eight ladies, two whom I knew to be Christians. The other six were from a Pentacostal church in Fort Defiance. After class and my prayer for the Word and for the ladies, there was deep silence. I asked if they had anything to say about the lesson. The lady beside me said, "Harriet, I have NEVER before tonight heard anything like what you said. Thank you for I was hit in my mind and heart." I was stunned because they had claimed to be Christians.
When I asked why, she replied, "Most Navajos have our Navajo culture to deal with. Our parents gave us nothing to think about spiritual things. We did not speak of DEATH -- taboo. We do not dare to speak the name of one who has "gone away" because that casts a curse on the dead one." Then the others started talking all together by agreeing with what she told me. They were rejoicing that the Bible words were there.
They each admitted they believe the Bible is God Bizaad, God's Word. They want to tell their families so I mailed to them copies of my notes with the verses. They know that Jesus died for their sins, so they will not be punished for them. They know He did it in their place (stead). But what their deaf hears did not hear is that our lives are short here on earth (like the tip of an iceberg). And the last minute here on earth becomes the first minute of an ETERNAL LIFE forever after (the REST OF THE ICEBERG)! Now they want others to hear it. The Lord will be glorified in their lives.
What a joy to be given the privilege of seeing them with open ears, eyes and hearts, acknowleging the TRUTH. They know the truth that JESUS IS THE WAY, THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE, and He really spoke the truth to them on Tuesday night, November 2, 2010. Now they can read their Bibles and look forward to the eternal life spoken to them in John 3:16. It almost seems unbelievable that no one explained the last part of that verse to them!
Please rejoice with me and continue to pray for the Navajo Ladies' Bible study every Tuesday night. We meet at 6:30 p.m. and usually stay until nearly 9:00 p.m. We meet in the KHAC (am) studio.
As I often repeat, "Our God is an awesome God."
In the Name of Jesus, I send my love,
Harriet Butler
